About linework

A line and its various style and movements was first introduced to me in Chinese Calligraphy  by artist Tan Khim Ser  in Life Art Society.  He became my teacher . During that same period I was also fascinated by western artists that seem to  embrace Chinese calligraphy , artists like Jackson pollock , Brice marden and franz Kline. The emulsion painting series (1) the peanut (2) the bitter gourd (3) the strawberry are my response to  the easten Chinese calligraphy and western abstract expressionism .

The next challenge was to evolve beyond the subject of vegetables to animal gestures and movements . The medium emulsion was not a suitable paint for the subject that need more control of  line details .  I searched in vain for a few years to find this new paint which I can work with that has a thickness that I can build like  corn starch but able to retain its shape after drying.

It was only after the change of my thinking that I  found my new paint. It is something that we use in our daily life : the pen . I realized that I don’t have to build material on top of the canvas but create an illusion of depth inside the canvas or paper in my case.  The Copernicus turn has given me the animal doodling (1) the wolf  (2) the dog (3)cat1 (4) cat2 and (5) cat3 . They are also made into tshirt worn by myself , an effort to exhibit my art directly to the public.

The logical conclusion is the subject of Man which can be symbolized by his head and face.  His body is animal . It is his head  which makes him different from all animals. And a logical object that represent a human face is a mask.
